This is a story about how people treat one another: life, love, and loss; “othering” people; connection and affliction; spirituality; what it really means to be neighbors. It follows the life of Sean Adams, who lives in a special but forgotten old logging town near the coast of North Carolina. The story follows the evolution of what’s become Sean’s grudging life, having endured decades of suffering over the loss of his young bride. Only then are his eyes unexpectedly opened by the happiest yet seemingly misplaced Suzuki family and their autistic son, who had moved in next door years earlier. But their arrival hadn’t been by chance. And their tragic departure wouldn’t be either.
